Wilderness South of Canaan Early History of Macedonia

Primitive Baptist Church from the V.B. Fillmore Collection

"...thou hast given me the heritage of those that fear thy name." PS 61:5
To fully appreciate where you are, sometimes you must
take a few steps back and remember where you have been.
This is true, not only for individuals, but for groups of individuals as well. Macedonia
Progressive Primitive Baptist Church was formed from the congregation of
Mt. Paron "Old Baptist" at Deer Head Cove, DeKalb County, Alabama.
It appears that Mt. Paron may have been organized from the
Predestinarian Baptist Church of Christ located at Head Springs, near
Valley Head, DeKalb County, Alabama.

The church at Head Springs was constituted on September 19, 1835. In the
Old Testament, paran is a Hebrew word that means "full of caverns. "
Mount Paran in the Old Testament is a wilderness south
and west of Canaan, full of caverns.
This must be how north Alabama appeared to the early settlers.
From Deer Head Cove in the northern part of DeKalb Co Alabama
to Bucks Pocket in the western portion,
this area is rich with caves and caverns.
The word paran has been spelled paron and parion, however in the church minutes
it is spelled paran and paron. Based on Church Minutes it appears that
Mt. Paran Primitive Baptist Church was constituted before
Jun of 1851 in the area
known as Deer Head Cove, DeKalb County, Alabama.
The original members were from Kentucky.
They included family names like Blevins, Countiss, Adkins, Evans, Steel,
Hartline, Forster,. Barton, Cross, Burkhalter,
Holland, Young, Dean, Grigsby, Watson, Avans and many, many more.
From this faithful congregation came the organization of
Macedonia Primitive Baptist Church on Saturday before the
fourth Sunday in April 1872.
The presbytery was composed of
Elder J. N. Franklin, Elder Richard Blevins, Deacon William Koger
and Eli Hill. The charter members were:
Enoch York Sr., Enoch York, Jr., G. W. Adkins, Hiziah McCollum,
Sylvania York, Nancy York, and Margaret Smith. The first pastor of Macedonia
Primitive Baptist Church was Elder Richard Blevins, 1800 - served the church 1872.
